Ottawa Bluesfest, one of the top ten outdoor music festivals in North America, is now in its 21st year, but has grown to become something much more than a phenomenally successful music festival. It’s an enterprise that has not only brought some of the biggest world talents to our city, but has also focused a great deal on our own local artists, community music programs, and has incorporated the involvement of many of our local businesses, artisans, and venues. I had a chance to talk to Ex ....

The Music and Beyond festival is one of of the most interesting events in Ottawa’s busy summer calendar.  Starting on Saturday, July 4 this two-week celebration of art and culture will present more than 75 concerts and events, with its ingenious showcase of classical music and other genres. What makes this artistic gathering really special, however, is its focus on the word “Beyond” in its name, as many of the planned activities explore themes that go beyond music.  Among th ....

The date is July 1st, 2015.  148 years have passed since Sir John A. MacDonald and his pals completed all the necessary paperwork for Canada to become an independent nation. In honour of this momentous occasion, “Dominion Day” was celebrated every year until 1982, when PM Ben Mulroney Sr. changed the name to “Canada Day”. Dominion City Brewing Co., based right here in Ottawa, decided to take back Dominion Day. And boy howdy, they nailed it. Inviting 600 of their closest fri ....

The TD Ottawa International Jazz Festival marked its 35th anniversary by successfully reaffirming its two-pronged appeal to jazz and non-jazz fans alike. The event, which ran from June 19 to July 1, in many ways functioned as two festivals under one event’s banner. On one hand the outdoor festival skewed to heavily populist shows (Huey Lewis and the News, Steve Miller Band, Pink Martini, Chris Botti, Jamie Cullum) and crossover shows intended to draw younger audiences (The Roots, Beirut, Joel Pl ....

“Is it cooler in this room, or is it my imagination?”  Yes, AXENÉO7 director Stefan St-Laurent explains, the room we’ve just entered is slightly cooler than the room we came from, due to this room’s lack of exterior windows. For a moment there, I thought that Tricia Middleton’s installation at the Gatineau exhibition space had tricked me into feeling chilled, as if her art had the power to control, merely by suggestion, the temperature inside the gallery, or to control my perception of th ....

Tanya Tagaq. Photo courtesy of the artist. I once had the opportunity to watch Tanya Tagaq perform in what seemed to me the unlikeliest of situations: in the community hall of her own hometown Cambridge Bay, Nunavut, in front of an audience of German tourists sporting thick coats in the middle of August, from a cruise ship making its way through the Northwest Passage, stopping on shore for a chance to learn about Inuit culture. I was mesmerized immediately by both the intensity of her performanc ....

Two of the RBC Bluesfest shirts designed by Kania, photo courtesy of Julie Beun It’s that time of year again for Bluesfest, one of Ottawa’s most-anticipated festivals. With the summer weather in full swing, everyone seems to come out of the woodwork to enjoy good company, great music and our city (without having to bundle up in multiple layers and parkas). I’m a true fashionista and gain all kinds of inspiration, and sometimes chuckles, as I browse through Instagram and Facebook photos of ....
