Rafa Nadal swaps tennis rackets for Pokerstars

Edited by John Stokes

Tennis professional Rafa Nadal has joined the ranks of the Pokerstars team and has swapped his tennis rackets for a set of cards.

The Spanish star has partnered up with the leading poker website to attract a global audience to the virtual tables. Appearing on TV and web advertisements as well as outdoor video billboards, Nadal will also be promoting the Pokerstars Mobile application, which allows players across the world to enjoy poker games wherever they are. The app is available to download on smartphone, android and tablet devices.

The advertisement is currently running on TV channels and is available to view on Youtube and the Pokerstars website. The scenes show Nadal engrossed by a poker game on his smartphone as he wonders through the streets of Barcelona, whilst passer-bys join in the action.

The 11 time Grand Slam champion admits that, although he enjoys the game, he still has a lot to learn. However, with the support of Pokerstars behind him and a competitive edge he is set to be claiming consistent prize pots in no time. Nadal has already received tutelage from Team Pokerstars Pro Victoria Coren and been given his very own poker coach by Pokerstars, but he also received loads of advice from players in a "Help Rafa" competition which was run by the website. Nadal also is feeling confident, saying "my friends know I'm naturally competitive, which has served me well in my tennis career. I'm hoping some of the skills I've developed on the court will help me improve my poker game."

Pokerstars were proud to welcome Nadal their poker family, as they claim that his sportsmanship and aggressive game play are the same traits that the top poker players use. They believe that his skills, once transferred to the tables, will help him to become a great player in the poker field as well as the tennis field.

Pokerstars' Chief Marketing Officer, Alex Payne speaking of Nadal's abilities said, "it's certainly good for the game. Rafa is a highly competitive athlete, a strategic player and known for his integrity both on and off the court. These qualities make him an ideal ambassador for Pokerstars and a compelling spokesperson for the game." He added, "Rafa's endorsements helps correct some of the misperceptions of the game, and emphasizes the great mix of entertainment and skill in poker when played responsibly."
